Holika Dahan is rooted in the story of Prahlada and Holika.
King Hiranyakashipu wanted everyone to worship him instead of Lord Vishnu. But his son Prahlada remained devoted to Vishnu. In anger, the king asked his sister Holika—who had a boon that fire could not burn her—to sit in fire with Prahlada in her lap.
But divine justice worked differently. Holika burned, and Prahlada survived.
What does this teach us?

Always avoid Bhadra Kaal while performing the ritual, as it is considered inauspicious for Holika Dahan.

Holika Dahan Puja Vidhi (Simple & Effective)

1. Preparation
- Take bath and wear clean clothes.
- Carry kumkum, haldi, flowers, raw cotton thread, coconut, and some grains (wheat or chana).
2. Offering to Fire
- Apply tilak to the Holika structure.
- Offer flowers and water.
- Wrap raw thread around the Holika 3 or 7 times while praying for protection.
- Offer coconut and grains into the fire.
3. Prayer Mantra
You may chant:
“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”
or
“Om Prahladaya Namah”
Pray for removal of obstacles and protection of your family.
4. Parikrama
Take 3 or 7 rounds of the fire with gratitude in your heart.
