If You Could Go Back and Witness Any Historical Event, Which One Would You Pick?
History is something we usually meet through books, photographs, stories and movies. But imagine being able to travel back in time—not to change anything, but simply to stand there and witness history being created.
If I had that opportunity, choosing just one moment would be difficult. Two people I would especially want to witness are Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy — The Courage to Challenge Society
I would love to see the time when Raja Ram Mohan Roy was questioning social practices that generations had accepted without challenge.
He believed society could progress only when people were willing to think, learn and speak against injustice.
Imagine living in a period when questioning tradition itself required tremendous courage.
I would want to observe his conversations, his determination and, most importantly, what gave him the strength to continue when people disagreed with him.
His journey reminds me that real change often begins with one person asking, “Why should things remain this way?”
Rani Lakshmibai — Courage in Action
My second choice would undoubtedly be Rani Lakshmibai, the Queen of Jhansi.
We have all heard stories about her bravery, but imagine actually witnessing that courage.
I would want to see the woman behind the legend—the leader making difficult decisions, protecting her kingdom and refusing to surrender quietly during the uprising of 1857.
What must it feel like to know the odds are against you and still decide to fight?
Her story represents something powerful to me:
Courage does not mean that you are never afraid. Courage means your purpose becomes greater than your fear.
Maybe That Is Why History Still Matters
The people who fascinate us from history often reveal something about the qualities we value today.
Some admire great thinkers.
Some want to witness freedom movements.
Some would choose scientific discoveries.
Others might want to experience an ancient civilisation, meet a spiritual teacher or watch a legendary ruler in action.
For me, Raja Ram Mohan Roy represents the courage to question, while Rani Lakshmibai represents the courage to act.
And perhaps we need both.
First, the courage to recognise what needs to change.
Then, the courage to actually do something about it.
Thought of the Day ✨
We may not be able to travel back and witness history, but every generation receives an opportunity to create some of its own.
Now I am curious—
If you could travel back in time and witness ONE historical event or meet ONE historical personality, who would you choose—and why?
